Jason Fanning

Coach Jason Fanning is the Head coach of the Highlander Soccer program since 2018 and has been with the program since 2016. Under his direction, the Highlanders continued their dominance with a 12th consecutive district title. Coach Fanning’s soccer experience includes head coaching positions at Alvin and Oak Ridge High schools and assistant positions at Channelview and Deer Park High Schools.  While in Alvin, Coach Fanning took an 0-25 team from the previous year to the playoffs and earned the 2007 Coach of the Year for Brazoria County. He has also been involved with various club programs from the Dynamo Academy to Texans Soccer Club in Klein. Coach Fanning attended Missouri University of Science and Technology where he majored in History and was a 3-year letter winner in football. Coach Fanning is happily married to wife Jessica and they share two amazing children Cooper, and Bailey.

Chris Gunzelman

Coach Chris Gunzelman is an assisted coach with the soccer program at The Woodlands High School since 2018. Coach Gunzelman worked previously at Cy-Falls High School (2016–2018), where he was the boys and girls JV coach. Before that, he coached boys soccer at Hays High School (2014–2016). Coach Gunzelman attended The University of Texas at Austin where he majored in Mathematics and played for the UT Soccer Club. He is married to his amazing wife Ashley, and they share a loving daughter, Breslin.

Head Coach Alumni

Gordy Schoeller

Coach Gordy Schoeller coached 34 legendary years at McCullough/The Woodlands High School. As The Woodlands Highlander Soccer Varsity Coach from 1982-2002, his coaching record was 274 -96-23. From 2003 until his protested retirement in December, 2015, Coach Schoeller prepared Freshman Highlanders for their Varsity roles and mentored many teenaged boys.  “The Stache” as the boys affectionately call him, is a native of Minnesota. He and his wife Susan still reside in The Woodlands, and The Highlander Soccer family hopes to see him every now and again on the sidelines or in the stands, cheering our young men onto victory!

Hans Kleinschmidt

Coach Hans Kleinschmidt coached 20 seasons at The Woodlands High School after teaching and coaching at Huntsville High School (1991-1995) and Berkner High School in Richardson (1996-2003).  During his 17 seasons as head coach, the Highlanders earned 11 consecutive district championships and made 9 appearances in the regional tournament with a state final four appearance in 2010. His Highlander teams had a record of 303-56-44. His oldest son, Andrew (’15), is a Highlander Soccer alumni and currently proudly serving in the United States Army; middle son Matt (’16) is also a Highlander Soccer alumni and currently at Texas A&M University, and his youngest son, Aiden, is an avid runner representing.
